Our silage film is tear-resistant and has high puncture resistance. This allows the silage to be preserved and stored, maintaining its high quality. To get the best possible quality from your feed in the silo, we first recommend a layer of microfilm, which minimizes the chance of air pockets. Then add a layer of silo film.
Microfilm is one of the most affordable investments you can make to ensure sustainable, high-quality feed.
Filling, packing & covering in a flat silo
As soon as the crop is dried above the press water limit (30% DM in a flat silo), it should be placed in the silo, packed well, and covered carefully. The distribution and packing of the crop inside the silo is the most sensitive and important step. Take your time and don’t let the transport chain rush the packing job – this is when you prevent heat build-up in the silo!
We recommend starting with a thin microfilm (also called vacuum film) that sticks to the feed in the silo, thereby squeezing out the oxygen. It is a very inexpensive investment to avoid poor silage. Then place the thicker silage film on top, and finally the cover fabric to protect the silo.
Covering the silo has two important functions:
- Exclude air – oxygen.
- Counteract heat stress – elevated temperature in the silo.
High-quality silage film solves both the problem of oxygen and heat build-up. It is also important to weigh down the plastic so that it does not flap in the wind and pump in air. A strong cover fabric provides additional protection against feed damage.
